Unlocking Our Ears

Has this ever happened to you?

There have been times in my life, both unintentionally and intentionally, when I’ve tuned out voices around me. A parent, a colleague, a coach, a teammate… someone who had something important to say, but I wasn’t ready to hear it or had heard it too much. Maybe you can relate?

Over time, I’ve learned the importance of using discernment when deciding who gets to shape and influence my life. But I’ve also realized something deeper:

It can be human nature to unintentionally tune out those around us that consistently invest in our lives and care the most…

As leaders and those that want to reach our full potential, we must recognize this tendency in ourselves and in the others we serve.

I’ve found that the very same lesson can land differently depending on the messenger and the moment. Sometimes, it’s not the idea or theme that needs changing - it’s the delivery: A different angle, a new voice or a shared experience can make all the difference.

I have found this to be true in my speaking… Some of the messages I bring are not earth shattering and original, BUT my experiences have blessed me with a platform and certain perspective to connect and reach where others have not.

Small shifts in who delivers the idea and how it’s communicated can unlock ears and inspire action.

Again, this doesn’t mean accepting or giving every piece of feedback. It is listening and planning with intention, even to voices we might normally dismiss, and searching for the useful kernel that we could apply to our circumstances and unlock some progress in our life.

With this in mind, here is a challenge for you:

What’s one intentional action you can take this week to empower someone around you?

Do you have a story where this has been true in your life?
