Goldfish and Ted Lasso

Goldfish and Ted Lasso.
Two things I did not think I would talk about this past week!

I had the honor to work with Eric Nee, CMAA and the Sun Prairie West athletic coaches midweek. It was an impactful session exploring opportunities of self-improvement, leadership and a framework to create culture that values the P.A.C.K. mindset.

When talking about the growth mindset and tools to consider to overcome moments of challenge and adversity, one coach spoke up about the “be a goldfish” mentality he uses with his team.

Goldfish are said to have a very short memory…

“Be a goldfish" is a saying from the show Ted Lasso that encourages athletes (or anyone) to move on from an error and refocus on the present moment and task at hand.

Forgetting your mistake, moving on to the next opportunity, to take action and continue to make progress.

This Sun Prairie team uses this saying in their own minds as a reminder during these moments but more importantly, to challenge one another and hold their teammates accountable to having a short memory, being in the moment and not allowing one challenge to compound and impact a future opportunity.

Sounds like I need to watch some Ted Lasso!

Are you a goldfish??
